Introduction to A Scene of Election Essay

The meaning of election – Our country is the largest democratic nation in the world. In a democratic system of governance, election signifies the act of people voting in favor of their preferred candidate from among those contesting. In a democracy, every adult has the right to vote; they cast their vote to elect their representative. It is through their right to vote that representatives are elected in the Lok Sabha, Vidhan Sabha (State Legislative Assembly), and elections at lower levels.

The importance of election in democracy

According to Abraham Lincoln, “Democracy is the government of the people, by the people, and for the people.” The meaning of democracy is the rule of the people. In a democracy, the process of election is adopted for central, state, and local governments, wherein the people, through their right to vote, select one candidate from their constituency as their representative.

The elected representatives, based on majority, form their government at the state and central levels and conduct the administration. Therefore, elections hold immense importance in a democracy.

The scene during election days

During election days, a completely different atmosphere prevails everywhere. Posters and banners in support of candidates are visible in various places. Prominent leaders of political parties address large public gatherings. Various means and materials of campaigning urge people to vote for their respective parties. Party workers from different parties go door-to-door for public relations and appeal to people to vote in their favor.

Discussions about the election are also seen in village squares (chaupals), marketplaces (haat-bazaars), bus stands, and common watering places (pan ghats). Wherever four people gather, the discussion revolves around who will win and who will lose. This scene of election is prominently visible everywhere from morning till evening during election days.

Major political parties and polling day

Many political parties participate in the election. Congress, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Samajwadi Party, Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP), Shiv Sena, Akali Dal, Trinamool Congress, etc., contest elections. Polling day is like a festival of democracy. Numerous polling centers are established for voting.

Voting commences from 7:00 AM. There are separate booths for men and women at the polling centers. As soon as voting begins, separate queues of voters form. An official applies an indelible ink mark on the index finger of the voter’s left hand. On polling day, all voters cast their precious votes. In the end, the fate of various candidates gets sealed in the voting machines.

Conclusion

The scene of election is like a major festival of democracy because it is through elections that public representatives are selected, and a popular government is formed. We must exercise our right to vote.
