Introduction to the essay on the dowry system
Since ancient times, food donation, education donation, and wealth donation have been given more importance in Indian culture. Under these two, Kanyadan was also considered an important donation. Parents used to give jewelry, clothes, and other necessary items to their daughters according to their capacity. This helped the daughter to get proper help while entering the household.
Distortion in the dowry system
The good feeling associated with dowry in the beginning gradually started to fade away. Initially, dowry was voluntary, but over time it became compulsory, as a result of which Kanyadan became a burden for the parents. The practice of religious marriages, mismatched marriages, and polygamy became prevalent.
The Dowry system is a stigma
In present times, the dowry system has taken a monstrous form and as a result, women are treated inhumanly. Marriage of a girl has become a complicated problem. Parents want to give dowry according to their capacity while the groom’s side wants to take dowry as per demand. They want to recover the entire expenditure from the birth of the boy till his marriage. In this era of inflation, parents sacrifice their lives to educate their daughters, to make them capable but then due to the need for dowry, they are burdened with debt for life. Many times, on not getting the desired dowry, the Baraat along with the groom returns. At that time, the girl’s side has to face humiliation.
Bad effects of the dowry system
Due to this system, the girl and her parents have to suffer many unbearable tortures. Today’s youth wants to adopt a humane approach, but some are not able to oppose their greedy parents and some people pretend to be reformists while arranging marriage, but at the time of marriage when they do not get the desired dowry, they torture the daughter-in-law, she is brought back after being tortured. Many times she is even murdered. In this, the percentage of burning the daughter-in-law to death is high. When the cruelty in the in-laws’ house crosses all limits, then she is forced to commit suicide to get relief.
Measures for elimination
In our country, the dowry elimination law was also made in 1975. Some strict provisions have been kept in this law, according to which a person who forces a woman to commit suicide for the greed of dowry should also be punished. The government is trying to eliminate this practice, and some social organizations are also trying to eradicate this problem.
Conclusion of the essay on the dowry system
