Meaning and Role of Environment
The literal meaning of environment is the surrounding atmosphere in which we breathe. It encompasses the entire natural environment comprising air, land, earth, sound, and more. Today, not only India but the entire world is grappling with the problem of environmental pollution. Currently, water, air, sand-soil, as well as trees, plants, agriculture, and even insects and pests are all affected by environmental pollution.
Despite numerous measures, including the annual observance of World Environment Day on June 5th by the United Nations and the World Health Organization, environmental pollution is not decreasing.
Causes of Pollution
Our biggest problem today is that the very environment that sustains our lives is becoming polluted. Effluents from large and small factories, increasing radioactivity from nuclear plants, sewage discharge from cities and towns, and mechanical means of transportation are all polluting the entire atmosphere.
Gas fumes, smog, and harsh noises are also causes of environmental pollution. Another reason for the increase in pollution is the unlimited growth of the population. Forests and fields are being cleared for industrialization, urbanization, and transportation facilities. This is also disrupting the balance of the environment.
Adverse Effects of Environmental Pollution
Continuous population growth, industrialization and urbanization, and the excessive exploitation of natural resources are constantly increasing pollution in the environment. This is adversely affecting the health of humans as well as wildlife, hindering the process of biological development, causing genetic side effects, and increasing the occurrence of floods and landslides. In Rajasthan, this is leading to the expansion of the desert.
The most significant negative impact of increasing environmental pollution is on human civilization, which could eventually lead to its destruction. The rise in the Earth’s temperature and untimely changes in seasons are destroying the natural environment.
Measures for Pollution Prevention
The World Health Organization is undertaking numerous measures to prevent pollution. The Government of India is making the following efforts for pollution control:
1. Emphasis is being placed on safe drinking water and rural sanitation programs under the Swachh Bharat Mission.
2. Proper arrangements are being made for the drainage of sewage from cities.
3. Efforts are being made to keep rivers like the Ganga clean.
4. Public awareness campaigns are also being conducted for environmental protection.
5. Measures are being taken to prevent deforestation and the illegal felling of trees.
6. Strict laws are being enacted for forest conservation.
Conclusion
The government in our country is taking many steps for environmental protection. Environment protection-related courses have also been introduced in the country. Treatment plants are being installed for the purification of toxic effluents and sewage from large industries. Simultaneously, afforestation programs are being carried out. Through all these measures, an effort is being made to maintain balance in the environment.
